Atya gabonensis
Origin: West Africa, South America
Atya gabonensis, the Vampire Shrimp, is a large, striking filter-feeding freshwater shrimp from West Africa and South America displaying variable blue-grey to lavender colouration with large, fan-like feeding appendages that capture microparticles from the water column. Completely peaceful and posing no threat to fish or other invertebrates despite its dramatic name, it requires strong flow and particulate-rich water to thrive. A fascinating and uncommon addition to planted community aquariums.
Position near areas of strong flow where suspended food particles are concentrated. Feed with finely powdered shrimp food or powdered spirulina directly into the current. Maintain temperature 24–29°C, pH 6.5–7.5. Ensure excellent water quality — this species is sensitive to copper and poor filtration. May be kept in groups for a more natural feeding display.
