About

The Vampire Pleco (Leporacanthicus galaxias), registered as L-240 under the L-number system, is a strikingly beautiful large plecostomus from the Rio Tocantins drainage in Pará, Brazil. Its jet-black body is covered in bright white to yellowish spots that are most vivid and numerous on juveniles, becoming more sparse and diffuse in large adults. Its sharp odontodes (small spines) on the cheeks and body give it a fierce appearance consistent with its 'vampire' name.

Unlike many plecos that are primarily herbivorous, Leporacanthicus galaxias is an invertivore — it uses its specialized, pointed teeth to prey on snails, crustaceans, and other invertebrates in its native rocky river environment. This diet requirement distinguishes it significantly from algae-eating plecos and must be met in the aquarium with meaty protein-rich foods.

The Vampire Pleco grows to about 25 cm and requires a spacious aquarium with excellent filtration. It is a cave-dweller that establishes a territory around a cave or hollow, defending it aggressively against intruders of the same or similar species. It is nocturnal and often hidden during daylight.

Despite its predatory dietary requirements, it ignores fish too large to eat and can be housed in large community aquariums with appropriate, suitably-sized tankmates.

Care Guide

Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 25–29°C, GH 4–12. Warm, soft to moderately hard water with excellent filtration. Strong water flow and high oxygenation are important. Weekly water changes of 30–40% given their high bioload.

Tank Setup: Minimum 200 liters for a single adult. Provide caves (clay pipes, slate caves, coconut shells) as essential shelter and territorial anchors. Large driftwood pieces are appreciated. Sandy or fine-gravel substrate. Powerful filtration — these fish produce significant waste.

Feeding: Invertivore that requires meaty protein. Offer sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, mussels, prawns, and snails (as enrichment). Do NOT rely on algae wafers as a dietary staple — they need meat-based protein. Feed in the evening when they are active. Remove uneaten food promptly.

Tankmates: Peaceful toward fish too large to be prey. Highly aggressive toward other large plecos competing for caves — keep singly unless providing multiple well-separated caves. Compatible with large South American community fish: large tetras, cichlids, and other robust species.

Health: Hardy when water quality is maintained. High bioload requires diligent filtration and water changes. Watch for bacterial infections and parasites. Ensure meaty diet is provided — vegetarian-only feeding causes long-term health deterioration.
