Chromis vanderbilti
Origin: Central Pacific, Hawaii to Johnston Atoll
Chromis vanderbilti is a diminutive, brilliantly electric-blue chromis from the Central Pacific, most associated with the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. At just 6 cm, it is an excellent choice for nano reef systems where its vivid colouration and open-water schooling behaviour create a dynamic, shimmering display. Peaceful with other small reef inhabitants, it readily accepts a wide range of foods and acclimates well to captivity.
Keep in groups of at least 5 in a 75 L or larger reef tank. Provide open water swimming space above rockwork. Feed finely sized pellets, frozen mysis, and enriched brine shrimp twice daily. Maintain temperature 23–27°C, SG 1.020–1.025. Compatible with most peaceful reef fish and corals. Ensure a tight lid — small chromis can jump.
