Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Veil Tail Angelfish, Long-fin Angelfish, Veil Angel
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Veil Tail Angelfish is a captive strain carrying the veil gene which produces extraordinarily elongated fins — the dorsal and anal fins extend far beyond the body, and the caudal fin develops long trailing lobes that flutter in the current. This elegant finnage transforms the already graceful angelfish silhouette into something truly spectacular.
The veil gene can be combined with any colour morph, so veil tails are available in silver, marble, koi, gold, and other variants. The elongated fins require care, as fin nippers will damage them rapidly; tank mates should be chosen carefully.
Despite their delicate appearance, veil tail angels are as hardy as standard fin types provided water quality is maintained. Their flowing fins are particularly prone to damage in strong currents, so gentle filtration is recommended.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; avoid strong turbulence that may damage flowing fins. Tank: 150 L tall tank; gentle filtration essential; plant densely but leave open swimming areas. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; feed 2–3 times daily in small portions. Breeding: Breeds like standard angelfish; veil gene is dominant and passed reliably to offspring. Compatibility: Strictly avoid fin-nippers (tiger barbs, serpae tetras); keep with gentle community fish only.
