Betta splendens
Also known as: Veil Tail Betta, VT Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish, Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
The veil tail is the ancestral foundation of modern ornamental betta keeping, beloved for its flowing fins and wide availability. It is the most forgiving of all betta fin types in terms of care, as the fins are reasonably durable. Veil tails come in virtually every colour combination imaginable.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — a heater and lid are essential. Tank: minimum 20L; a simple, well-planted setup is ideal for this beginner-friendly fish. Feeding: betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, flake food; feed twice daily in small amounts. Behaviour: males are territorial — one per tank; otherwise peaceful and interactive. Compatibility: one of the most community-friendly bettas; avoid fin-nippers.
