Astronotus ocellatus
Also known as: Veil Tail Oscar, Veiltail Oscar
Origin: South America
The Veil Tail Oscar is the most extreme fin variant of Astronotus ocellatus, selectively bred for a dramatically extended, flowing caudal fin that may be twice the length of standard specimens. The rest of the body retains the typical Oscar colouration. Like all Oscars, this fish is highly intelligent, interactive with its keeper, and a devoted parent when breeding. Extra care must be taken with tankmates since even mildly nippy fish will damage the delicate extended caudal fin, potentially leading to infection. A dedicated aquarium for a veil tail pair is strongly recommended.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–18). Tank: Minimum 450L; very smooth décor; keep with only the most peaceful large cichlid tankmates. Feeding: Carnivore; large sinking pellets, frozen prawn, krill, earthworms; carotenoid supplements for colour. Breeding: Open spawner; veil-tail offspring variable; some show standard fin length. Compatibility: Pairs best kept in a species tank; fin nippers are a significant threat.
