Corydoras venezuelanus
Also known as: Venezuela Cory, Venezuelan Bronze Cory
Origin: Venezuela (northern coastal rivers)
Corydoras venezuelanus is a larger, robustly built cory from the coastal river systems of northern Venezuela. Its olive-brown body is scattered with small dark spots and has a slight iridescent bronze sheen under bright lighting. As a coastal species living in rivers influenced by Venezuelan highland geology, it tolerates significantly harder and more alkaline water than most Amazonian cories — an important practical advantage for aquarists in hard-water areas.
In the wild it inhabits a variety of shallow coastal streams and lowland rivers, often in areas subject to seasonal variation in both water volume and chemistry. This ecological flexibility is mirrored in its adaptability in captivity, where it tolerates considerable variation in parameters without ill effect.
C. venezuelanus is a highly underrated species: it is peaceful, sociable, moderately large and impressive, and tolerates hard-water community conditions that would challenge many other cories. It is periodically available through Venezuelan and Colombian importers and represents excellent value for aquarists who cannot easily maintain soft water.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.8, temperature 22–26°C; unusually tolerant of hard and alkaline water. Tank: 80 L with fine sand or smooth gravel, plant cover, and good filtration; suited to hard-water setups. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and blanched vegetables; an enthusiastic and unselective feeder. Breeding: Typical cory spawning; cool water change trigger; may breed readily given its robust adaptability. Compatibility: Excellent for hard-water community tanks; compatible with livebearers, larger tetras, and other robust species.
