Procambarus versutus
Also known as: Versutus Crayfish, Gulf Crayfish
Origin: Gulf Coast, USA
Procambarus versutus is distributed across the Gulf Coastal Plain of the southern USA, preferring slow-moving streams, swamps, and weedy ponds. It is a moderately sized crayfish with warm olive-tan colouration and a sleek, streamlined profile compared to some of its congeners. It is an active, bold species that commands attention in a well-set-up species aquarium.
This species appreciates a sandy or fine gravel substrate that allows it to exhibit natural burrowing behaviour. Water quality should be consistent and well-filtered, as P. versutus is sensitive to deteriorating conditions despite its general hardiness. Regular water changes and good oxygenation are important.
For keepers interested in building a collection of southern USA native Procambarus, P. versutus makes an excellent addition alongside species like P. hagenianus and P. paeninsulanus in separate dedicated tanks.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–18, KH 2–12; consistent quality important. Tank: minimum 80 L, soft substrate for burrowing, caves, anchored decor; no plants. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, detritus, leaf litter. Breeding: female broods eggs under pleopods; seasonal breeding cycle typical. Compatibility: territorial — keep alone; compatible only with fast upper-column fish.
