Mastacembelus frenatus
Also known as: Victoria Spiny Eel, Striped Spiny Eel
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Mastacembelus frenatus is a medium-sized spiny eel from Lake Victoria and its satellite lakes in East Africa, a region renowned for its exceptional and threatened cichlid diversity. As a Lake Victoria endemic, this species requires harder and more alkaline water than Southeast Asian spiny eels, aligning it naturally with Victoria cichlid biotope aquariums.
Its bold lateral striping is more pronounced and regular than in many African spiny eels, making it an attractive addition to any large East African community display. Like other lake-adapted spiny eels it seeks out sandy and rocky margins, burrowing in soft substrate while using rocky formations for shelter.
Feeding is straightforward: earthworms, prawns, bloodworm, and sinking pellets are all accepted. It is peaceful toward similarly sized cichlids and catfish but will consume small fish. Captive specimens represent important representatives of a threatened endemic fauna.
Water: Moderately hard to hard, pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 22–26°C, GH 8–20, KH 5–15. Tank: Minimum 180 L, sand and rock decor, Victoria biotope style, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawns, bloodworm, and sinking carnivore pellets. Breeding: Not recorded in captivity; spawning cues unknown. Compatibility: Victoria cichlids and appropriate-sized catfish; avoid small fish.
