Synodontis victoriae
Also known as: Victoria Squeaker, Lake Victoria Synodontis
Origin: Lake Victoria basin
Synodontis victoriae is one of the few mochokids associated with Lake Victoria, sharing that lake's moderately alkaline, warm waters with a diverse assemblage of haplochromine cichlids. It is a medium-built, robustly patterned species with scattered dark spots on a pale background and a compact, athletic body form suited to its lacustrine lifestyle.
In the aquarium it proves adaptable to standard East African or general African community conditions, tolerating a broad range of moderately hard, slightly alkaline water with ease. It is bolder than many Synodontis and can often be seen during daylight hours patrolling the lower portion of the aquarium.
This species is a practical and reliable choice for aquarists maintaining East African cichlid communities who want an interesting, active bottom-dwelling catfish.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 7.0–8.5, moderately hard (GH 8–18, KH 4–10). Tank: 200 L minimum; rocky caves and flat stones; open sandy substrate; moderate flow. Feeding: Sinking pellets, Spirulina wafers, frozen mysis and bloodworm; accepts commercial foods readily. Breeding: Cave spawner; not commonly documented in home aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful with East African cichlids of similar size; avoid very small fish.
