Haplochromis sp. 'thickskin'
Also known as: Victorian Orange Cichlid, Thickskin Victorian
Origin: Lake Victoria, Africa
Haplochromis sp. 'thickskin' is a colloquial trade name for a Victorian haplochromine that produces males with a striking, vivid orange colouration over most of the body. Like many Victorian cichlids it has not been formally described and is maintained in the hobby primarily under this trade designation. It is a rewarding species that colours up intensely under good conditions.
Water: 23-27°C, pH 7.2-8.5, hard water; consistent quality essential. Tank: 150L minimum; rock structure with some open areas. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen mysis, artemia; colour-enhancing foods beneficial. Behaviour: Moderately aggressive; males compete for territories and female attention. Compatibility: Victorian cichlid community; compatible with similarly sized haplochromines.
