Vieja bifasciata
Also known as: Two-banded Cichlid, Bifasciata Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Vieja bifasciata inhabits the Usumacinta River drainage across Mexico and Guatemala. The species is named for two broad dark bands crossing the body, which become especially pronounced in juveniles. As males mature and enter breeding condition, the lower body and belly flush with intense yellow to orange colouration, creating a dramatic bicolour effect. Like most Vieja, it is a robust herbivore that demolishes soft aquatic plants, requiring a tank furnished with durable hardscape rather than live vegetation. A rewarding species for Central American cichlid enthusiasts.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–18). Tank: Minimum 400L; large rocks, smooth driftwood, and robust substrate; skip soft aquarium plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables, algae wafers, and supplement with frozen foods. Breeding: Flat-surface spawner; pairs become intensely territorial; large space reduces inter-pair aggression. Compatibility: With other robust large Central American cichlids of comparable size.
