Vieja breidohri
Also known as: Breidohr's Cichlid, Breidohri Vieja
Origin: Central America
Vieja breidohri is a rare and highly attractive cichlid from the upper Grijalva drainage in Chiapas, Mexico. It is infrequently available in the hobby, which makes it a sought-after target for Vieja enthusiasts. The species is of moderate size for the genus, with a silvery-green body adorned with scattered spangles. Males in spawning condition undergo a remarkable transformation — the head and anterior body flush with brilliant turquoise-blue, producing a bicolour effect reminiscent of some African cichlids. It shares typical Vieja husbandry requirements including herbivorous feeding and moderately hard alkaline water.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–18). Tank: Minimum 400L; rocky aquascape with driftwood; no delicate live plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina-based pellets, algae wafers, blanched greens, and occasional frozen foods. Breeding: Open or pit spawner; breeding colouration is spectacular; both parents guard intensely. Compatibility: With other mid-to-large Central American cichlids; protect with ample territory per pair.
