Vieja coatzacoalcos
Also known as: Coatzacoalcos Cichlid
Origin: Mexico (Coatzacoalcos River)
Vieja coatzacoalcos is native to the Coatzacoalcos River system in Veracruz, Mexico, making it one of the Atlantic slope Vieja species. Adults exhibit a complex patterning of irregular dark blotches over a golden-olive base, with males developing a pronounced cephalic hump. The finnage shows attractive red-orange margins that are particularly vivid in dominant, well-fed individuals.
This species inhabits slow to moderate river sections with substrates of sand, silt, and decomposed leaf litter, often near submerged roots and woody debris. In the aquarium it benefits from similar complexity in its environment — a mix of hiding spots and open swimming areas. The species is an accomplished digger and will rearrange most substrate decorations.
Breeders should be aware that this Vieja can be particularly aggressive during spawning, and tankmates should be selected with care. The species is considered moderately hardy once established and responds well to high-quality nutrition.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18, KH 3–10; maintain excellent filtration for this large-waste producer. Tank: 450 L minimum; mix of rocky caves, driftwood, and open sand areas; secure all decor. Feeding: Omnivore — high-quality pellets, meaty frozen foods, and regular vegetable supplements. Breeding: Substrate spawner on flat rocks or cleared sand; intense parental defense of fry. Compatibility: House with other large, robust Central American cichlids; remove small tankmates when breeding.
