Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Vienna Emerald Guppy, Emerald Green Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (European show lineage)
The Vienna Emerald Guppy is a prestigious European show strain developed to meet the exacting standards of the Austrian and German show circuits. Males display a uniform, deep emerald-green metallic body with the colour extending seamlessly into a large, symmetrical delta tail.
This strain is somewhat more demanding than commercial fancy guppies, as the tight selection for show traits has reduced its genetic diversity. Stable, hard water, excellent nutrition, and reduced stress are key to bringing out its best colour.
Breeding stock should be carefully selected from males with full-body colour coverage and females showing good dorsal and body shape. Quality line-bred Vienna Emerald fish are genuine collector's pieces.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.2–8.0, GH 12–20; hard, stable water is non-negotiable for show colour. Tank: 60 L minimum; gentle filtration; avoid tankmates that cause stress. Feeding: Spirulina flake, colour-enhancing pellets, live Artemia nauplii; varied diet critical. Breeding: Livebearer; brood size 15–40; breed from only the best-coloured individuals. Compatibility: Best in a show strain tank; avoid boisterous community fish.
