Mastacembelus armatus
Also known as: Vietnam Spiny Eel, Vietnamese Tire Track Eel
Origin: Vietnam, Cambodia (Mekong Basin)
This Vietnam-origin form of the Mastacembelus armatus complex is regularly imported from Vietnamese exporters and displays a well-defined and attractive lattice or honeycomb body pattern in warm brown and cream tones. Vietnamese Mekong basin populations of this complex often show slightly more clearly defined patterning than Indian material, making them visually appealing.
Care requirements are identical to other large members of the complex: a very large aquarium with deep fine sand, strong biological filtration, and a fully escape-proof lid. This is a long-lived species requiring a decade-plus commitment from the keeper. Regular large water changes and a well-maintained filter are critical to long-term health.
Earthworms and prawns are strongly preferred; sinking pellets provide a practical supplement. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to consume and works well in Southeast Asian large community tanks alongside oscars, large catfish, bichirs, and similar-sized robust species.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 5–15, KH 2–8. Tank: Minimum 280 L, deep fine sand, strong filtration, stable heavy decor, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawns, bloodworm, mussel, and sinking pellets. Breeding: Not commonly achieved; egg-scattering assumed. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust Southeast Asian community fish; avoid small species.
