Tanichthys micagemmae
Also known as: Vietnam White Cloud, Vietnamese White Cloud Mountain Minnow
Origin: Vietnam
Tanichthys micagemmae, described in 2001, is a close relative of the well-known White Cloud Mountain Minnow (T. albonubes) but is native to rivers in northern Vietnam rather than China. It is a slender, somewhat more elongated fish than its famous cousin, with a less vivid lateral stripe and more muted fin colouration, though it retains the essential elegance and grace of the genus.
Its care is straightforward and broadly similar to T. albonubes, though it tolerates and actually prefers slightly warmer temperatures — up to around 24°C — making it marginally more adaptable to typical community aquariums while still not being a fully tropical fish. It should not be kept at the high temperatures favoured by bettas and discus.
As a species seldom seen in the mainstream trade, Tanichthys micagemmae appeals particularly to collectors and specialist nano tank enthusiasts. It breeds readily in captivity following the egg-scattering protocol of the genus.
Water: Temperature 18–24°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 5–15; tolerant of a wide range of conditions, slightly warmer than the classic White Cloud. Tank: Minimum 40 L; planted cool-to-warm water tank; gentle flow; secure lid as the species is an active swimmer and potential jumper. Feeding: Omnivorous; micro-pellets, flake, and small frozen foods accepted; varied diet maintains colour and condition. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; follows same protocol as T. albonubes; breeds readily over plants or spawning mop at around 22°C. Compatibility: Peaceful with all small community fish tolerating similar temperatures; good with standard White Clouds if temperature is kept moderate.
