Schistura cf. vinciguerrae
Also known as: Vinciguerrae-type Schistura, Mekong Stone Loach
Origin: Mekong basin, SE Asia
Schistura cf. vinciguerrae is sold under this tentative name for fish collected from the Mekong basin that share the general appearance of S. vinciguerrae but whose precise taxonomic identity has not been confirmed. The genus Schistura is one of the most species-rich freshwater fish genera in the world, with hundreds of described species and many more awaiting description, making definitive identification of trade specimens extremely challenging without DNA analysis.
In aquaria, this species is a typical Schistura in behaviour: active, bold, and mildly territorial with conspecifics. It establishes small feeding territories among pebbles and defends them with brief chasing displays that are assertive but rarely damaging. Groups of four to six in a sufficiently spacious tank are manageable, with established hierarchy reducing overall aggression frequency.
Care is straightforward for the intermediate keeper: clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow, a smooth pebble substrate, and a varied omnivorous diet. The species is more temperature-flexible than Sewellia or Gastromyzon and can be maintained in a standard tropical hillstream setup, making it accessible to a wider range of aquarists.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; moderate flow and good oxygenation; keep nitrates below 25 ppm with regular water changes. Tank: 70 L minimum; smooth pebble substrate with rocky hiding zones; avoid smooth-walled bare tanks that increase stress and territorial conflict. Feeding: Omnivore — sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp; feeds eagerly from the substrate; easy to condition on prepared foods. Breeding: Not documented for this undetermined form; treat as per other Schistura species for conditioning attempts. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates; avoid pairing with very small or slow community fish.
