Serrasalmus geryi
Also known as: Violet Line Piranha, Gery's Piranha
Origin: Araguaia-Tocantins, Brazil
Serrasalmus geryi is endemic to the Araguaia-Tocantins drainage of central Brazil and is universally regarded as one of the most beautiful piranha species in existence. The vivid iridescent violet-blue lateral stripe that runs the length of its silver body shimmers under aquarium lighting with an almost supernatural quality.
Like all Serrasalmus it is a solitary predator that must be kept alone. Its rarity in the wild and restricted export from Brazil mean that specimens command premium prices and must be sourced with particular attention to legality and sustainability. Water must be soft and slightly acidic for optimal colouration.
Piranha ownership is restricted in many countries; export from Brazil is regulated — verify both before purchase.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft water essential (1-8 dGH); high-quality, tannin-supplemented water best preserves the violet lateral line colouration. Tank: Minimum 350L for a single adult; subdued lighting enhances the iridescent lateral line; driftwood and dark substrate recommended. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, fish fillet, lance fish; use long tongs — this is an aggressive feeder; feed every 2-3 days. Breeding: No reliable captive breeding records; its rarity makes any attempt an exceptional undertaking. Compatibility: Solo housing only; one of the most valuable piranhas in the hobby — confirm legal status in your country and the source country before purchase.
