Atyoida pilipes
Also known as: Viper Shrimp, Fan Shrimp, Singapore Flower Shrimp
Origin: Southeast Asia
Atyoida pilipes, the Viper Shrimp, is a large filter-feeding fan shrimp that spends its time perched in current-exposed positions, opening its fan-like maxillipeds to capture suspended micro-particles from the water. Unlike most grazing shrimp, it depends heavily on suspended organic matter and fine particles rather than biofilm, so good water movement and adequate organic input are essential. Males are noticeably larger and more vividly patterned than females.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 6–12, KH 2–6; good oxygenation and moderate flow. Tank: minimum 40 L, wood or rocks to perch on in current; avoid very still water. Feeding: suspended micro-particles, liquid invertebrate food, powdered spirulina added to flow. Behaviour: stationary filter feeder; opens fans in current; peaceful. Compatibility: peaceful with fish too large to eat it; avoid aggressive tank mates.
