Faxonius virilis
Also known as: Virile Crayfish, Northern Crayfish
Origin: Northern USA / Canada
Faxonius virilis, reclassified from Orconectes virilis, is one of North America's most widely distributed crayfish species, inhabiting lakes, rivers, and streams across a vast range from the eastern USA into Canada. It is cold-adapted, thriving in cool, well-oxygenated water and remaining active even at near-freezing temperatures, making it an excellent choice for unheated aquaria in temperate climates.
In coloration, F. virilis is typically olive-green to brown with a distinctive rust-orange tint on the chelae and walking legs, giving it a warm, natural appearance in a biotope-style tank. It is a hardy and responsive species that becomes quite bold and interactive once settled in its aquarium.
This species is regulated in some regions due to its potential as an invasive species. Keepers should verify local regulations before purchase, ensure escape is prevented, and never release individuals into natural waterways.
Water: 8–22°C, pH 7.0–8.5, GH 5–20, KH 3–15; cool to cold water preferred; avoid heating. Tank: minimum 80 L, cobble or gravel, flat rocks, caves; very tight-fitting lid essential. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, leaf litter, occasional protein. Breeding: seasonal; cold-winter conditioning triggers spring breeding; female broods eggs. Compatibility: territorial — keep alone; compatible with robust cold-water fish in upper column.
