Farlowella vittata
Origin: Venezuela, Colombia (Orinoco basin)
Farlowella vittata is a strikingly elongated loricariid catfish from Venezuela and Colombia's Orinoco basin, distinguished by a well-defined dark lateral stripe running the entire length of its camouflaged stick-like body. Like all Farlowella, it is a dedicated grazer of algae and biofilm that requires excellent water quality, driftwood, and broad plant leaves for resting surfaces. A peaceful and uniquely shaped oddity that rewards careful husbandry with long-term residency.
Maintain in a 120 L or larger well-planted tank with driftwood and gentle flow. Feed algae wafers, blanched zucchini, and spirulina tabs alongside naturally growing biofilm. Maintain temperature 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft-to-medium water. Extremely sensitive to elevated nitrates — weekly water changes are essential. Do not house with boisterous or fin-nipping species. Provide broad leaves (Anubias) for resting.
