Vittina semiconica
Origin: Southeast Asia
Vittina semiconica is a small freshwater nerite snail with a flattened, semi-conical shell decorated with intricate brown and black patterning. It is a dedicated and highly effective grazer of hair algae, diatoms, and green spot algae from glass, stones, and hardscape surfaces. Like all nerites, it cannot reproduce in freshwater — eggs are laid but fail to develop, keeping populations naturally controlled in the home aquarium.
Add 1–2 snails per 10 L of tank volume for effective algae control. Requires calcium-rich, moderately hard water for healthy shell growth — avoid very soft or acidic water. Temperature 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0. Provide smooth glass and rock surfaces to graze. Supplement with algae wafers when natural algae is limited. Will occasionally attempt to escape — ensure a tight-fitting lid.
