Viviparus contectus
Origin: Europe
Viviparus contectus, Lister's River Snail, is closely related to V. viviparus but is distinguished by a more pronounced keeled spiral and slightly flatter spire on its rounded, banded shell. A live-bearing species native to European slow-moving waterways, it grazes on algae and organic matter and makes an authentic, historically accurate addition to European biotope aquariums or cold-water garden pond setups.
House in a minimum 40 L cool-water aquarium or pond. Temperature 10–22°C — does not require heating in a temperate European room. Feed on naturally growing algae and supplement with blanched vegetables. Prefers moderately hard, alkaline-leaning water (pH 7.0–8.5). Compatible with European coldwater fish such as sticklebacks and native gudgeon. Will give birth to live young under good conditions.
