Viviparus viviparus
Origin: Europe
Viviparus viviparus is a large, rounded freshwater snail common throughout European river systems, bearing a banded brownish-green shell and the unusual trait of giving birth to live young. It is a naturally effective grazer and detritivore, processing organic matter from the substrate and glass surfaces. An authentic choice for European biotope aquariums or outdoor garden ponds where its native origins make it ecologically appropriate.
House in a minimum 40 L cool-water aquarium or outdoor pond. Does not require heating in temperate European settings; temperature 10–22°C. Feed on biofilm and supplement with lettuce and spinach. Provide a soft substrate for burrowing. Avoid housing with aggressive fish that may nibble on soft tissue. Will reproduce in freshwater — manage population in closed systems as needed.
