Aphyosemion volcanum
Also known as: Volcano Killifish
Origin: Cameroon highlands
Aphyosemion volcanum is an uncommon non-annual killifish from the cool, high-altitude streams of the Cameroon highlands. Males display deep red and blue patterning that is all the more vivid in cooler water. Its requirement for lower temperatures than typical Aphyosemion makes it a specialist's fish, best maintained in a dedicated species tank where temperature can be kept below 24 °C year-round.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, very soft and acidic; cooling important. Tank: 30 L species tank; dense planting; peat filtration; secure lid. Feeding: Live Daphnia, Artemia, and micro worms; high-quality micro-pellets. Behaviour: Males competitive; keep one male with two to three females. Compatibility: Species tank only; temperature requirements restrict tankmate choices.
