Pterois volitans
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Pterois volitans — the red or volitans lionfish — is one of the most dramatic predatory fish available for the home aquarium. Its elaborate red and white banding and long, venomous dorsal spines create an extraordinary silhouette. It is a slow, deliberate ambush predator that will eat any fish small enough to fit in its mouth. Handle with extreme care — stings are intensely painful. FOWLR tanks only; will eat smaller fish and most invertebrates.
WARNING: Venomous spines — handle with extreme caution. FOWLR only. Feed: meaty foods (silverside, krill, frozen shrimp). Train off live food. Eats any fish or invertebrate it can swallow.
