Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri
Origin: Amazon basin, Brazil
Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri is a seldom-exported small tetra from tannin-stained Amazonian forest streams, displaying a slim, translucent body with a faint lateral stripe and small caudal spot. It thrives in dark, softwater blackwater setups that replicate its shaded forest stream habitat. A peaceful schooling fish that rewards correct water conditions with calm, graceful group movement and appealing iridescent highlights.
Keep in groups of at least 8 in a 60 L minimum blackwater aquarium. Use a dark substrate, driftwood, and dried leaves (Indian almond, oak) to create acidic, tannin-rich water. Target pH 5.0–6.5, GH 0–6, temperature 23–27°C. Feed micro pellets, daphnia, and frozen baby brine shrimp. Sensitive to elevated hardness and alkalinity — use RO or rainwater. Dim lighting preferred.
