About

The Wagtail Blue Platy is a perennial favourite in the aquarium hobby, combining a vivid blue body with entirely black fins — a combination that provides bold contrast and remains attractive under almost any aquarium lighting. The wagtail name comes from the distinctive dark caudal fin that wags as the fish swims.

This strain is among the hardiest platy varieties, tolerating water temperatures from 18 to 28°C without issue and adapting to most community aquarium conditions. It is an ideal first fish for beginners.

Wagtail platys breed freely and fry are relatively easy to raise, making them rewarding for hobbyists interested in observing livebearer reproduction.

Care Guide

Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; exceptionally adaptable to varying conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; any planted community setup works well. Feeding: Quality flake and spirulina; supplement with frozen Daphnia or Artemia. Breeding: Very prolific; 20–80 fry per brood; floating plants protect fry from adults. Compatibility: Ideal community fish; compatible with virtually all peaceful freshwater species.
