Wajpamheros nourissati
Also known as: Nourissati's Cichlid, Blue Usumacinta Cichlid
Origin: Guatemala (Usumacinta drainage)
Wajpamheros nourissati is one of the rarest cichlids in the hobby, known from a restricted distribution in the Usumacinta system of Guatemala. Adult males in peak condition display an extraordinary peacock-blue iridescence across the flanks and fins, punctuated by darker markings, creating a visual impact that competes with the most colorful cichlids from Africa or South America. The species name honors M. Nourissati, who contributed significantly to knowledge of Usumacinta cichlids.
Due to its scarcity, virtually all specimens in the hobby are captive-bred through a small network of specialist breeders. Hobbyists acquiring this species should be aware of its significance and contribute to breeding efforts where possible.
Care is similar to other mid-sized Usumacinta cichlids — good water quality, moderate current, and a mixed diet. Its aggression level is moderate and it can be kept in well-structured CA cichlid community tanks with appropriately matched tankmates.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18, KH 3–10; pristine water quality to maintain full blue coloration. Tank: 300 L minimum; rocky caves, sand substrate, moderate current; dark background enhances blue coloration. Feeding: Omnivore — high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen mysis, shrimp; colorant-enhancing foods optional. Breeding: Substrate spawner; strong biparental care; rare in captivity — document spawns if achieved. Compatibility: Mid-size robust CA cichlids; avoid very aggressive species to protect this rare fish.
