Carassius auratus
Origin: Captive bred
The Wakin is one of Japan's oldest goldfish varieties, featuring a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body similar to a common goldfish but with a distinctive forked double tail fin that flows elegantly in the current. The bold red-and-white colouration makes it visually striking in both indoor aquariums and outdoor ponds. Among the most robust fancy goldfish available, it is far more resilient than round-bodied varieties and capable of reaching 30 cm in a well-maintained pond.
House in a minimum 200 L aquarium or well-filtered outdoor pond. Perform 25–30% weekly water changes to manage goldfish bio-load. Feed high-quality sinking goldfish pellets and supplement with blanched vegetables. Temperature 10–22°C — coldwater species that does not require heating in temperate European settings. Ideal pond companion for koi in smaller feature ponds. Remove from outdoor ponds in severely cold winters.
