Apistogramma walkeri
Also known as: Walker's Apisto, African Apistogramma, Ghanaian Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Ghana
Apistogramma walkeri is one of the most unusual members of the genus by virtue of its origin: it is found in Ghana, West Africa, making it the only Apistogramma species native to Africa. This biogeographic oddity has long fascinated cichlid researchers and hobbyists alike, and the species is among the most enigmatic dwarf cichlids in the hobby.
Males display attractive chocolate-brown dorsal coloration contrasting with golden flanks and vivid fin coloration during breeding. The species inhabits small forest streams in southern Ghana with moderately soft, neutral to slightly acidic water.
Walker's Apistogramma tolerates a broader range of water conditions than its South American relatives and can be kept in a wider variety of aquarium setups, making it relatively accessible while remaining genuinely unusual.
Water: Moderate — pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–27°C; tolerates moderate hardness. Tank: 60 L with hiding places, plants, and fine substrate. Feeding: Varied diet: pellets, frozen Artemia, bloodworm, and Daphnia. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards; relatively easy for the intermediate keeper. Compatibility: Small West African riverine species or general peaceful community fish.
