Wallaceochromis signatus
Also known as: Signatus Cichlid, Nigerian Cave Krib, Wallace's Cichlid
Origin: Nigeria
Wallaceochromis signatus is a Nigerian endemic cichlid belonging to the same krib-group clade as Pelvicachromis, and shares the cave-spawning, pair-bonding reproductive strategy of its more familiar relatives. It is a small, shy species with a distinctly spotted caudal peduncle and soft olive-tan body colouration, making it inconspicuous until the female's belly colouration intensifies in breeding condition.
This is a genuinely rare fish in the hobby, partly because it lacks the flamboyant colouration of Pelvicachromis species and partly because collection from its forest stream habitat is infrequent. It is nevertheless a fascinating and little-studied species that offers the dedicated West African cichlid enthusiast a chance to work with something truly uncommon.
Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) matching its Nigerian forest stream origin is recommended. A well-planted 60 L tank with multiple caves, leaf litter, and dim lighting creates an environment in which this shy species will settle and eventually spawn.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 1–8, KH 1–4). Tank: 60 L; dim lighting, leaf litter, multiple small caves, and dense planting. Feeding: Micro pellets, fine flake, and small live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and micro-worms. Breeding: Cave-spawner forming pair bond; female guards eggs inside cave, male defends perimeter. Compatibility: Peaceful nano community or species tank; avoid boisterous or large tankmates.
