Lepomis gulosus
Also known as: Warmouth, Warmouth Bass, Goggle-eye
Origin: Eastern and central United States
Lepomis gulosus, the Warmouth, occupies a slightly different ecological niche from most other sunfishes, favouring heavily vegetated, turbid, slow-moving waters such as swamps, oxbows, and sluggish lowland streams. Its mottled brown and olive colouration provides excellent camouflage among aquatic vegetation, and its large mouth allows it to take prey considerably larger than similarly sized Lepomis species.
In the aquarium, Warmouths are characterful and somewhat secretive, spending much of the day lurking among plants or beneath overhanging driftwood. They become bolder at feeding time and can be trained to take pellets and frozen foods from the surface or mid-water. A well-planted tank with open central space suits them well.
They are best maintained as a single specimen or with large, robust companions that will not be intimidated or consumed. Their tolerance of warmer, lower-oxygen water makes them suitable for setups that would stress cooler-water sunfish species.
Water: 15–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, tolerates moderately soft to hard water; some turbidity acceptable. Tank: 250 L minimum; dense plantings, driftwood caves, and subdued lighting replicate swamp habitat. Feeding: Earthworms, crayfish, feeder insects, frozen invertebrates; trains well to pellets. Breeding: Builds gravel nest; male guards aggressively post-spawning — remove female. Compatibility: Best as a solitary specimen or with large tough tankmates.
