About

Garra waterloti inhabits fast-flowing, rocky streams in Guinea and Sierra Leone, West Africa — one of the few Garra species from the African continent. Like its Asian relatives, it is equipped with a modified oral disc that allows it to adhere to smooth rock surfaces and graze algae, diatoms, and biofilm even in strong currents. Its body is moderately flattened ventrally with a robust, streamlined dorsal profile.

In the aquarium, Garra waterloti requires clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong current and a rocky substrate. It is hardier than some hillstream specialists and adapts reasonably well to standard tropical water parameters provided oxygen levels are adequate. It is peaceful toward other species and is an asset in any West African biotope aquarium as a natural surface cleaner.

Feeding is centred on algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables — zucchini and cucumber are particularly relished. It also browses biofilm and algae from all surfaces continuously. Occasional frozen bloodworm or daphnia provides protein supplementation. Its rarity in the trade makes it a prized find for specialist West African aquarists.

Care Guide

Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate hardness; good oxygenation and flow essential. Tank: 80 L minimum; rocky substrate, moderate to strong current, smooth rocks for grazing. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, biofilm; occasional invertebrate supplement. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with all species; ideal in West African biotope alongside tetras and pelvicachromis.
