Biotodoma wavrini
Also known as: Wavrini Dwarf Eartheater, Wavrini Eartheater, Orinoco Cupid Cichlid
Origin: Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela
Biotodoma wavrini is the second and slightly larger species in its genus, native to the blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro, upper Rio Orinoco, and adjacent Colombian drainage systems. It has a more slender body than B. cupido and carries a prominent dark lateral spot with finer iridescent scaling across the flanks. Blackwater conditions bring out the best in its colouration.
As a blackwater species, B. wavrini is more demanding than its cousin when it comes to water chemistry. Soft, warm, acidic water with botanical additions closely replicates its home waters and is strongly recommended for long-term health and breeding success. It is peaceful and can be maintained in groups or community setups with similarly demanding soft-water species.
Like B. cupido, it is a biparental mouthbrooder. Both parents share buccal incubation of eggs and subsequent fry guarding. Captive breeding has been documented but remains less common than in B. cupido due to the stricter water quality requirements.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (0-4 dGH); blackwater with botanical additions strongly recommended. Tank: Minimum 120L; fine dark sand, Indian almond leaves, driftwood; dim lighting preferred. Feeding: Small sinking pellets, live and frozen Artemia, bloodworm, daphnia; avoid large food items. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; blackwater conditions essential for breeding success. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with cardinal tetras, pencilfish, and other strict blackwater species.
