Polypterus weeksi
Also known as: Weeks' Bichir
Origin: Africa
Polypterus weeksi is a large polypterid native to the Congo River where it inhabits deep channels and rocky substrate zones. Its bold patterning and substantial size make it a commanding display animal. Like all members of the genus it is an obligate air breather and a dedicated escape artist requiring a heavy, sealed lid.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 350L, large rocky caves, driftwood shelter, very secure lid. Feeding: Carnivore; prawns, earthworms, pieces of white fish, large sinking pellets. Behaviour: More assertive than smaller Polypterus species; holds territory around its chosen shelter. Compatibility: Keep with large robust fish; other large bichirs, big cichlids, large plecostomus.
