Silurus glanis
Origin: Europe
Silurus glanis, the Wels Catfish, is Europe's largest native freshwater predator, capable of reaching 3 metres and living for up to 80 years in wild river systems. Small specimens display the iconic broad flat head, wide gape, and long sensory barbels that give this species its prehistoric appearance. A nocturnal ambush predator, it requires a very large dedicated pond for responsible long-term keeping — small specimens grow rapidly and must never be underestimated in terms of eventual size requirements.
Requires a minimum 10,000 L dedicated pond for long-term responsible keeping. Feed large meaty foods: fish, earthworms, and chunks of seafood. Temperature 4–25°C; fully cold-hardy for European outdoor ponds. Provide deep water zones (1.5 m+) and large shelters. Keep alone or with species too large to be eaten. Never release into natural waterways — a non-native apex predator in most Belgian/Dutch waters. Permits may be required in some municipalities.
