Silurus glanis × S. aristotelis
Also known as: Wels Hybrid Catfish, Hybrid European Catfish
Origin: Captive bred (Europe)
The Wels Hybrid Catfish is produced by crossing Silurus glanis (Wels Catfish) with the endemic Greek Silurus aristotelis, a hybridisation practised in Central and Eastern European aquaculture research programmes and occasionally in specialist ornamental fish breeding. The hybrid exhibits hybrid vigour — faster growth than either parent — and in some studies has shown a calmer, more approachable temperament in captivity than the pure Wels. It is typically intermediate in adult size between the two species.
In the aquarium, the hybrid requires the same demanding conditions as its parent species: cool water, enormous volume, industrial filtration, and a diet of large whole fish and meaty prey. It is not suitable for any but the very largest home fish rooms or public-display systems. Its hybrid origin means that releasing it into natural waterways — already a concern with pure Wels — carries additional ecological risk, and responsible disposal protocols must be planned before acquisition.
For institutional keepers, the Wels Hybrid offers an interesting subject for comparative behaviour studies alongside pure Wels and Aristotle's Catfish. For private collectors, it represents a slightly more tractable but equally imposing alternative to either parent species.
Water: 12–24°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness; cool, well-oxygenated conditions. Tank: 8 000 L minimum; indoor pond preferred; very heavy lid. Feeding: Whole fish, large earthworms, large meaty pellets once conditioned. Breeding: Not documented; hybrid fertility uncertain. Compatibility: Large predator — keep alone or with fish far too large to be consumed.
