Hyphessobrycon werneri
Also known as: Werner's Tetra
Origin: Peru, Colombia (Amazon tributaries)
Hyphessobrycon werneri is an attractively striped tetra from the Amazon tributaries of Peru and Colombia. It carries a broad golden-green lateral band above a contrasting black stripe, creating a two-toned horizontal pattern that is distinctive within the genus. A calm, peaceful schooling species, it does well in biotope aquariums featuring peat-stained water, dried leaves, and fine-leaved plants for cover and spawning. Its moderate care requirements and non-confrontational temperament make it a suitable choice for intermediate hobbyists seeking less-common Amazonian tetras. It accepts most prepared and live foods and breeds via egg-scattering.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C. Leaf litter or peat filtration enhances condition. Tank: 60 L minimum; Amazonian biotope style with fine-leaved plants, driftwood, and dark substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over fine plants; soft acidic water required. Moderate difficulty. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other gentle South American species of similar size.
