Protopterus annectens
Also known as: West African Lungfish, African Lungfish
Origin: Africa
Protopterus annectens is a remarkable obligate air-breathing fish from the floodplains of sub-Saharan Africa that possesses functional lungs and can aestivate in dried mud for months or even years. It is a long-lived, surprisingly intelligent predator that can cause serious injury with its powerful jaws. Its ability to recognise regular feeders and respond to them is well documented.
Water: 25-30°C, pH 6.0-8.0, soft to moderately hard; highly adaptable to water conditions. Tank: Minimum 400L, very large and robust, deep fine substrate, extremely heavy and bolted lid. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, earthworms, fish; large meaty foods presented via tongs. Behaviour: Aggressive and powerful; can bite through fingers — handle only when absolutely necessary. Compatibility: Species tank only; will attack and injure all tankmates over time.
