Callopanchax occidentalis
Also known as: Western Killifish, Occidentalis Killifish
Origin: Sierra Leone, Guinea
Callopanchax occidentalis is a large and visually impressive non-annual killifish from the forest streams of Sierra Leone and Guinea. Males develop a spectacular pattern of red, orange, and blue across the body and fins, with the unpaired fins particularly vivid. Its larger size and assertive temperament mean it requires a dedicated species tank, and its rarity in the hobby makes captive breeding an important goal.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft and slightly acidic. Tank: 60 L species tank; floating cover plants; very secure lid essential. Feeding: Large live and frozen invertebrates; insects, earth worms, blood worm. Behaviour: Males highly territorial and aggressive; strictly one male per tank. Compatibility: Species tank only; too large and aggressive for most killifish community tanks.
