Melanotaenia australis is endemic to the river systems of Western Australia, where it inhabits hard, often slightly alkaline water. Males display reddish-orange flanks with vivid blue iridescent scale edges, creating a jewelled effect under aquarium lighting. A hardy and adaptable species that is well suited to the moderately hard water typical of many aquariums.
Water: 20–28°C, pH 7.0–8.5, moderately hard to hard water. Tank: 120 L+, with open swimming space and hardy plants or rocks. Feeding: Omnivore; flakes, pellets, and occasional frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; males display vivid colour when spawning. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; thrives with other Australian rainbowfish.
