Hypsibarbus wetmorei
Also known as: Wetmore's Barb, Goldfinned Barb
Origin: Thailand, Indochina
Hypsibarbus wetmorei is native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems of Thailand and neighbouring Indochina, where it inhabits large rivers, floodplain lakes, and the middle reaches of tributary streams. It is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed barb that can grow to 25 cm, and its golden-silver flanks glimmer with every movement. In open water, groups of this species school in graceful formations reminiscent of the large river carp they superficially resemble.
Hypsibarbus wetmorei requires a large aquarium — at minimum 300 litres — with good filtration, moderate to strong water movement, and plenty of open swimming space. Like many large barbs, it is entirely peaceful but can accidentally damage delicate plants or dislodge decor simply through its size and activity. Hardy, robust plants and stable, securely weighted decor are recommended.
This species is an omnivore with a tendency toward vegetable matter in the wild, but in the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and frozen invertebrates readily. Its impressive size, elegant body form, and peaceful temperament make it a superb centrepiece for large Asian biotope aquariums.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 6–20); moderate to strong current. Tank: 300 L minimum; robust plants, secure decor, strong filtration, open swimming space. Feeding: Omnivore; sinking pellets, spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables, frozen bloodworm. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; rarely bred in home aquaria due to size requirements. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with other large, peaceful cyprinids, medium cichlids, and large catfish.
