Amblyeleotris wheeleri
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Amblyeleotris wheeleri is a hardily colourful shrimpgoby with alternating white and orange-red bands and electric blue spots adorning its upright dorsal fin. In the wild it shares a burrow excavated and maintained by an Alpheid pistol shrimp, with the nearly blind shrimp relying on the goby's keen eyesight as a sentinel while the goby gains a safe refuge in return. One of the most popular and robust shrimpgoby species for reef aquariums with sandy substrates.
Provide a minimum 100 L reef tank with a 5–7 cm deep fine to medium sand bed and live rock. Ideally pair with an Alpheid pistol shrimp (Alpheus randalli or similar) for natural symbiosis behaviour. Feed frozen mysis, copepods, and small pellets twice daily. Maintain temperature 24–28°C, SG 1.020–1.025. Ensure a tight lid — this species is a persistent jumper. Keep only one per tank unless in a mated pair.
