Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: White Butterfly Discus, Butterfly Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The White Butterfly Discus is among the rarest and most sought-after of all domestic strains. Its nearly white body is traversed by delicate veins of pale sky-blue, resembling the wing venation of a butterfly — an effect that intensifies under soft, diffuse lighting. The red eye provides the sole contrasting accent.
This strain is more demanding than most domestic discus, requiring near-pristine water quality to prevent the white base from yellowing or stress bars from appearing. It is best suited to experienced discus keepers who can maintain the stable, warm, very soft conditions required.
Due to its pale colouration, the White Butterfly shows stress responses immediately and visibly, making it both a rewarding challenge and a reliable indicator of tank health. A well-kept specimen in peak condition is among the most breathtaking freshwater fish in the hobby.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-6.8, very soft (1-5 dGH), KH 0-3; near-zero nitrates to preserve white pigment. Tank: Minimum 250 L, light substrate or bare bottom breeding tank, soft diffuse lighting. Feeding: High-quality white-flesh protein sources — white mosquito larvae, mysis, lightly coloured pellets; avoid strong colour enhancers that may tint white areas. Breeding: Pairs readily in clean, stable conditions; eggs and fry require protection from bright light. Compatibility: Species-only or with very peaceful, non-nippy companions; stress must be minimised.
