Acanthurus japonicus
Origin: Western Pacific, Philippines, Japan
Acanthurus japonicus displays a rich brown body with a distinctive white patch covering the cheek and snout, complemented by yellow highlights on the dorsal and caudal fins and a vivid orange-yellow caudal spine. Closely resembling the Whitecheek Tang but with a more extensive white facial marking, this species is both hardy and adaptable — an excellent choice for intermediate reef keepers seeking a robust, algae-grazing tang with striking natural patterning.
Provide a minimum 300 L reef tank with ample open swimming space and strong circulation. Feed a varied algae diet: nori, spirulina flakes, and algae-based frozen food daily. Maintain temperature 23–27°C, SG 1.020–1.025. May be territorial toward other tangs of similar body shape; introduce carefully in mixed tang systems. Quarantine before introduction as this species is susceptible to ich.
