Arothron hispidus
Also known as: White-spotted Puffer, Stars and Stripes Puffer
Origin: Indo-Pacific (coral reefs and lagoons)
Arothron hispidus is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific on coral reefs and lagoon floors, where it feeds on a variety of hard-shelled invertebrates. It is one of the most commonly kept large marine puffers in public aquaria and by specialist hobbyists, prized for its friendly demeanour and ability to interact with human keepers. Adults can reach 50 cm and require very large, well-filtered systems.
Water: 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4, SG 1.020–1.025; full marine water with excellent filtration. Tank: Minimum 600 L for adults; open substrate, large rocks, and robust non-live-rock decor. Feeding: Clams on the half-shell, squid, prawns, cockles, and hard marine invertebrates. Behaviour: Curious and personable; less aggressive than many puffers but will bite decor and corals. Compatibility: Species-only or with large, robust non-invertebrate fish in FOWLR systems; incompatible with reef tanks.
