Mastacembelus alboguttatus
Also known as: White-Spotted Spiny Eel, Polka-Dot Spiny Eel
Origin: Myanmar
Mastacembelus alboguttatus is one of the more visually attractive spiny eels from Myanmar, displaying an arrangement of distinct white or pale cream spots across a deep brown to near-black body. This pattern is more consistent and clearly defined than the reticulations seen on the tire track eel, giving it a clean and graphic appearance.
This species inhabits slow-moving and still lowland waters in Myanmar where soft, warm, and slightly acidic conditions prevail. In the aquarium it follows the same husbandry requirements as other similarly sized Mastacembelus: deep soft sand, excellent filtration, and an escape-proof lid. Dim lighting and dense hiding spots will encourage daytime visibility.
It accepts frozen and live meaty foods readily; earthworms and bloodworm are particular favourites. Suitable tankmates include large cyprinids, peaceful cichlids, and robust catfish. A single specimen in a 200 L or larger aquarium with appropriate decor makes an impressive centrepiece for a Myanmar biotope.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 3–12, KH 1–6. Tank: Minimum 200 L, deep fine sand, caves and driftwood, sealed lid, subdued lighting. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, bloodworm, prawns, mussel, and sinking pellets. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; assumed egg-scatterer. Compatibility: Peaceful toward large robust tankmates; will eat small fish.
