Triportheus albus
Also known as: White Triportheus, White Keel Tetra
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Triportheus albus is a slightly smaller and more slender species than its congener T. angulatus, with a notably white-silver body coloration and the same characteristic keeled belly and expanded pectoral fins that define the genus. It is native to the Amazon basin and inhabits similar surface habitats to other Triportheus species, feeding on floating insects, seeds, and organic material at the water surface.
In the aquarium Triportheus albus requires a minimum 300-litre setup with an open surface zone, a tightly fitted lid, and soft to moderately hard warm water. It is peaceful and does well in groups of five or more with a wide range of other medium to large South American fish. Its preference for the surface layer and mid-water makes it an excellent companion for bottom-dwelling Corydoras, loricariid catfish, and geophagine cichlids.
Feeding is uncomplicated — floating pellets, dried insects, and frozen foods are all accepted readily. Triportheus albus is an attractive, underappreciated schooling species that adds surface activity and an unusual wing-fin profile to South American community aquariums. Its white-silver shimmer and elegant keel body make it particularly attractive under bright lighting.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.5, 24–28°C; regular water changes; avoid stagnant conditions. Tank: 300 L minimum; open surface swimming space; very secure lid. Feeding: Surface feeder — floating pellets, dried insects, flake; varied diet. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent surface layer component for large SA community tanks.
